Scientists in the UK are working on a project that is looking at adding satellite navigation to handheld devices such as mp3 players. The aim of the project is to allow users to customize the system so that the mp3 player will notify the user when they are in the vicinity of a point of interest; either by vibration or a change in sound. The system could also be programmed to alert users to a change in direction by altering the level of sound in either ear. Less sound in the left ear; turn left. No word yet and how long it will take to produce a prototype; but watch this space.
